War spending could be $20 billion higher this year than last. The Pentagon has requested $189.3 billion for the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan during the budget year that began Monday. That's compared to $169 billion in the fiscal year 2007 that just ended.
Here a look at the increases since 2001, according to the Defense Department.

今年はじめ、ブッシュ政権は2008年度予算において、イラクとアフガンに対し1475億ドルを要求した。

9月26日には、ロバート・ゲーツ国防長官が、来年の増派延長費の一部を補うため、2008年補正予算として420億ドルを求めつもりであることを言った。
＊あわせると、$189.5 billionになる。

Earlier this year, the Bush administration requested US$147.5 billion to cover the costs of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan for fiscal year 2008.
On 26 September, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced he would be asking Congress for an additional US$42 billion in supplemental 2008 funding, in part to help cover the costs of extending the surge of US forces in Iraq into next year.

もっともこういった額は、戦費の実態を表していない。とても分かりやすいところで言うと…

ワシントンポストの9月26日の報道によると、ブラックウォーターは約800億ドルをイラク関連の契約で受け取っているが、興味深いことに、その90%が国務省からの出費であり、わずか10%がペンタゴンからだという。

Blackwater, the US firm embroiled in controversy over the shooting of Iraqi civilians last week, received nearly US$800 million from contracts performed in Iraq. Interestingly, the Washington Post reported on 26 September that 90 percent of Blackwater's contracts have been funded by the US State Department, and only 10 percent by the Defense Department.
